PROJECT 7 FLORAL PATTERN

When I don’t work on a painting with a single subject—like a bird, a portrait, or some other object—I love to work on patterns.

Painting a pattern is a particular exercise. You have to compose your image without a central subject. Your motif has no central point of focus and can be repetitive. If you paint a pattern consisting of birds, for example, no one bird should be bigger or more prominent the others—they should all play an equal role in the overall design.

I love to paint patterns with flowers. To me, it is like painting a bouquet without a vase, not knowing where the flowers start, where they end, or where they come from. This type of painting is not abstract, but it isn’t reality, either.
