Disaster Prevention and Recovery
After designing your database schema, your most important database administration task is defining a database backup and recovery strategy. If your application crashes or your database server hangs and requires a reboot, there is a chance that the file system will suffer such severe damage that Apache Derby's built-in crash recovery support will not be able to restore your database to a consistent state. To prepare for such an unfortunate event, you want to be able to restore your data from a known point in time. A good database backup and recovery strategy gives you and your database users the confidence that, in the event of a disaster, their hard work or content will not be lost.
