Chapter 3. Assessments

To measure is to know. Anything else is just a guess.

This chapter introduces the most useful APM activity—assessments. These are not just for APM practitioners, they are for all the other folks, too. Assessments are simply measurements and observations about your current business practices. I will focus on monitoring, but the technique is fundamental to documenting the state of any variety of systems. Essentially, to figure out where you are going and how to get there, you need to first assess what you are already doing.
