Abstract
This chapter describes what software architecture and design are. Topics including capacity planning, types of hosting modes (hosted internally, vendor hosted, SaaS, ASP), and web applications vs. client-server applications are described and compared. Comparing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is explained. It also describes how interaction with other applications or systems can impact the design.
