Chapter 10

Updates and Patches

Abstract

Every application will need to be updated or patched eventually. This chapter describes the process of receiving updates from the vendor and applying them to the application. The support software on the application server also needs periodic updates. Updates can be broken down into major releases, minor releases, interim fixes, and data only updates. Steps in the update process include reading the release notes and installation guide, backing up the system, developing a project plan and a recovery plan, applying the upgrade, and then testing the system.
