As advanced leaders evolve in their leadership roles, they will eventually have the opportunity to lead other leaders. This is an area that is rarely discussed in leadership topics, yet highly important, given the fact that leading leaders is unlike managing staff.
In essence, a leader of leaders is someone in a higher-level leadership role, such as a CEO, who leads other less-ranking leaders, such as department heads. Of course, a leader of leaders can also apply to departmental leaders and less-ranking leaders as long as they are leading others who are in leadership roles, such as directors, managers, supervisors, and so on (Salacuse 2006).
