Preliminary Background

The reader will find that this book strongly resembles a semester course, as if it were the lectures and the exercises in a bound volume. In fact, the actual execution of a semester course has been captured in the form of a book with minor alterations. Each chapter is a ‘lesson’ and has been planned for effective delivery and smooth learning.1 In effect, the book is indeed a course and the two words may be used interchangeably.
