A liquid passes through a flow-smoothing capacitor which uses a gas cushion to smooth out sudden variations in the feed flow.
When the valve position x is varied, the mass of liquid in the long feed pipeline accelerates or decelerates, with the momentum in the pipeline then causing a second-order response of the flow f as it enters the vessel against the spring resistance of the gas cushion.
