In this chapter, we provide an overview of survey research in terms of the process, practical concerns, and applications to public and organizational studies. Surveys are a mainstay of data collection generally. They are also used extensively in all areas of public service. They are seen as a relatively low-cost method of gathering information and are familiar and accessible to most everyone. Surveys produce data that can be analyzed using either qualitative or quantitative methods, or both. Surveys also offer increased opportunities for randomness, which may increase representation.
