Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration
Before a consumer can begin using a Web Service, he must be able to locate that service. This problem has been solved many times under similar paradigms. For example, consider DNS, which is programmatically queried to resolve domain names to IP addresses. Another example, but one that requires manual intervention, is that of a Web search engine. With Web search engines, the obvious goal is to find Web sites that contain content or metadata that matches your search terms. UDDI has this same basic intent and purpose, but it is used for discovering Web Services.
