Inverse Methods in Underwater Acoustics
Abstract
The acoustic field in the ocean contains information about physical processes and the structure of the ocean medium through which the acoustic signal has propagated. The process of extracting the information from measurements of physical quantities associated with the acoustic field is known as inversion. This chapter provides a mathematical background for the forward and inverse problems in Section 9.2 and then discusses three applications of inversions in underwater acoustics.
