As mentioned in Section 10.5 longer sonar transducers and higher frequencies produce higher resolution at shorter ranges. However, higher frequencies reduce swath width due to sound attenuation. There is a limit on the transducer length a towfish or AUV can carry. The range resolution (RR) normal to the towfish/AUV track can be improved by using broadband pulses, where B (unit: Hz) is the sonar pulse bandwidth and c (unit: m/s) is the sound velocity, i.e.:
