When people discuss issues rationally and are prepared to concede the merit of opposing viewpoints, this represents one of the highest achievements of a civilized society. Unfortunately, this idealized situation is not always attained. Thus, we have movements where the participants who discuss an issue are certain that they have the correct viewpoint. It follows logically, in their minds at least, that anyone who doesn’t agree must be wrong. What can result is discord and possibly violence.
