Passive Solar Design
This part presents methods to assist in making decisions about passive solar design at two levels of detail: one for preliminary estimates during schematic design and one for more detailed design and calculation of system performance. The methods are those presented in Passive Solar Design Handbook, Volume 2, prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy by the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, January 1980. The primary author was J. Douglas Bal-comb.
The methods are applicable for residential and small commercial buildings where the heating requirement is determined primarily by losses through the building envelope, with only a small contribution of internal gain from occupants, lighting, and equipment. Six variations ...
