Abstract:
Routers are network layer systems that implement the ubiquitous Internet Protocol (IP). The functionality of IP routers can be split into control plane operations and data plane operations. The control plane implements the routing functionality necessary to achieve global connectivity as well as error handling. The data plane implements the forwarding of network traffic. Detailed functional and performance requirements are presented. The main operation in the data plan that affects system performance is to determine on which output port to forward a given packet.
