Abstract:
The application layer is responsible for implementing distributed applications and their protocols. The Internet application layer encompasses several sublayers: session layer, presentation layer, and application layer. This chapter reviews briefly the functionality that is implemented in these sublayers and presents commonly used protocols as examples. While the application layer is highly diverse and a multitude of protocols exist, network systems play a limited role in the implementation of this layer.
