Current trends in networking point toward the need for new network architecture to replace the current Internet and address the lack of inherent security, lack of quality of service, and limitations in scaling. With more heterogeneous end systems and a new networking paradigm, new protocols need to be introduced into the network. However, no single protocol stack is likely to accommodate the needs of all possible new applications. Instead, multiple networks with different functionality are expected to coexist on a single infrastructure.
