16 MONITORING AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS WITH THE CAN BUS

Cars use a complex network of electronics to monitor operations and control various functions, including engine management, temperature measurement, and window and lock controls. These electronics and devices communicate with each other over the controller area network data bus (CAN bus).

In this chapter, you’ll learn to interface your Arduino with the CAN bus to monitor data from certain automotive electronics. You’ll set up and test an Arduino-to-CAN-bus data connection and then monitor and record real-time engine statistics for later analysis.
