IN THE LATE 1990s, IT WAS FASHIONABLE TO MEASURE A COMpany’s performance in terms of its stock price. In fact, it was all anyone talked about. Networking events, conferences, and business lunches were filled with discussions of IPOs and options. Young entrepreneurs were turning up on the cover of Fortune magazine. How good were the companies they ran? Just look at the stock price. It was the yardstick of the moment.

It didn’t take long for that bubble to pop, and when it did, many companies landed with a thud. It was a cold, hard education for some of those young newcomers to the business world that measuring a company’s health solely on its stock price was risky business.
