Abstract

As the fundamental sense that humans need to feel and perceive, health is an essential component of human growth as well as the environment to which humans belong. Since health is a resource that allows people to carry out their roles in society, it is essential that we look after ourselves. Furthermore, technology is now present everywhere in the modern world, including hospitals. Wireless medical sensor networks (WMSNs) hold great potential for use in healthcare applications, as patients can be monitored using these networks. WMSN, also referred to as the “Internet of Things,” allows for a worldwide approach to the construction of healthcare infrastructure. When patients are used as remote users in an intrahospital setting, WMSN can be used to intelligently monitor a variety of physiological parameters of the patients. Continuous monitoring using implanted and wearable body sensor networks will improve at-risk patients’ early disease and emergency condition detection. In this review, we explore several healthcare applications, examining the challenges they present to wireless sensor networks in the context of the imperative to safeguard patient privacy and security.
