Abstract
The Digital Twin (DT) is a revolutionary advent in manufacturing industries to achieve Industry 4.0 by interacting with real-world types of machinery that can be controlled in an immersive environment. The idea is appealing, but many people, particularly those working for small and medium-sized enterprises, still need to figure out how to put it into practice in actual manufacturing processes. This chapter explores the several digital twin applications in smart manufacturing that significantly influence a complete solution for improving effectiveness, efficiency, and decision-making processes on product design and prototyping to predictive maintenance, quality control, and more concerning the standard framework defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/Draft International Standard (DIS) 23247. Here, it also summarizes the DT vision for production processes and its guiding principles, concepts, and technical solutions, a concise overview of the current research on DT concepts, practical implemented operations in industries, and potential avenues for further enhancement in the DT.
