Abstract

Recent years we have seen the emergence of several technologies that are critical to the development of the Industrial IoT and smart manufacturing. These include next-generation material science, advanced robotics, cyber-physical systems, big data, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), operational intelligence and generative design for additive manufacturing. Manufacturers are thinking about new business models based on real-world implementations, in which they offer services instead of products and use the digital twin to optimize the product’s performance and availability. In addition to full maintenance and operational optimization established on the digital twin’s predictive and prescriptive capabilities, customers are provided the usage of the product or equipment. As a more profitable and manageable business model, the manufacturer retains ownership of the equipment while offering the maintenance service established on a digital twin.
