5The Impact of Data Security on the Internet of Things

5.1 Introduction

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of different physical and technological devices that communicate through the Internet [24]. IoT also involves interconnecting computing devices that use the Internet to send or receive data [49]. The IoT mainly refers to the network of physical devices such as a vehicle, machine, and home appliances, which use sensors and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) through the Internet to connect and share information [47]. The Internet is exposed to cyber threats and, because IoT mainly uses the same platform, it is also subjected to the same threats [47]. The security challenge affects users directly; privacy of personal information on the Internet is not guaranteed. The personal information of the users, including their behavior on the Internet, is collected and stored to edify their personal service preferences [57]. The access to and ability to store users' personal information can pose challenges, such as the information being exploited by hackers, thus putting individual/s at risk.
