  • Rise of Burmese Power (Late 18th century)

Leadership: Alang Paya, followed by his son Badawpaya.

Imperialism: Expansionist policy begins, including conquests in Upper and Lower Burma, Arakan, and Manipur.

  • Burmese Aggression (Early 19th century)

Goal: Eyeing the rich province of Bengal, and frequent incursions into its territory.

British Stance: Initial preference for negotiation, no direct action taken.

  • Tensions Escalate (1823)

Critical Incidents:

  1. Burmese occupation of Shahpuri Island.
  2. Manipur falls to Burmese, threats to Cachar and British Bengal’s frontier.
