Wetlands in Assam
- Wetlands are distinctive ecosystems that offer water and a home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Natural wetlands develop in areas where groundwater or surface water congregates. Wetlands are frequently called the ‘kidneys’ of a catchment area due to the water filtration activities that take place there.
- Permanent wetlands are those that have water year-round, whereas temporal wetlands are those that fill only sometimes. Others, known as ephemeral wetlands, only have water when it has rained a lot or when there has been a flood, which may only happen occasionally.
