Appendix C – Glossary
- 5 whys:
- Method of evaluating a problem or question by asking why five times. The purpose is to get to the root cause of the problem and not to address the symptoms. By asking why and answering each time, the root cause becomes more evident.
- 5 Ws:
- Asking why something happened—when, where, what, why, or who did the task.
- 5W2H:
- Same as the five Ws but adding how and how much.
- 5Ss:
- Method of creating a self-sustaining culture that perpetuates a neat, clean, and efficient workplace:
Shine: Keep things clean. Floors swept, machines and furniture clean, all areas neat and tidy.
Sort: Clearly distinguish between what is needed and kept and what is unneeded and thrown out.
