Sustainable development requires environmental concerns to be integrated into engineering design on the same level as economic considerations. The Sustainable Process Index (SPI) addresses this need and provides a comprehensive evaluation of ecological sustainability based on the concept of strong sustainability using only material and energy balances known to an engineer, even in the early stages of design.
