Realizing the Potential: The Markets

As India opens up to the world, it is developing rapidly as a meaningful market for business and investment. At first glance the large population numbers seem remarkably inviting, but closer examination shows that this is misleading, as although India has a large consumer base, the majority of its population is rural and with low income and limited purchasing power. This chapter examines the growing market sectors of India including market segments based on purchasing power, the emerging Indian multinational enterprises (MNEs), the entrenched knowledge and business processing industry, public sector, and state owned enterprises and family owned businesses.
