This appendix provides a discussion of the formats commonly used in astronomy and basic operations that any astronomical software is able to apply. You can find additional information in many books about digital photography.

Common File Formats

All of the information contained in an image is stored in a file. Each of the many ways to organize the parameter and pixel data inside the file is called a format. Each format has its advantages and disadvantages and is used for a particular purpose.
