New Power Dynamics

Remote work arrangements have caused arguably the biggest shake-up to power relationships at work in memory, and it has happened so quickly.

During the COVID-19 period, frontline workers worked from their place of work whereas managers worked from home. This meant a virtual disconnect between colleagues, either across the entire organization, or between levels within an organization. The impact of this disconnect on relationships should not be underestimated and may have long-term implications of widening perceived status inequalities. It remains to be seen how power relationships will change after many remote workers proved themselves able to work effectively with a much reduced level of management.
