The relationship between employee and employer used to be different in the industrial age—it was based on long-term loyalty on both sides. This was disempowering for employees, because it was rarely acceptable to have any expectations of your employment beyond a paycheck and basic benefits. But you could pretty much expect to have these until you retired and a pension to sustain you in retirement so long as you performed sufficiently well. That’s no longer the case.
