Preface to first edition

The function of a reference book is not always easy to define. My view is that it should be able to provide relatively brief but accurate accounts of a variety of topics under a general heading – in this case audio engineering. Also the assumption has to be made that the reader already knows something of the subject. If not then he or she should instead be looking for a textbook. Furthermore, a reference book should, I feel, be as readable as possible. The last requirement seems to me to be very important. The reader that I have envisaged is a busy person and such people do not want to spend time wading through pages of turgid prose when they require information.
