Glossary

Every industry creates its own jargon, mostly to save time when talking about complex subjects. But it can be intimidating to the uninitiated.

Here are some of the audio terms I’ve thrown around in this book. I’ve also included a couple of production terms you probably already know, in case sound people are reading this as an introduction to the video world.

ADAT Alesis Digital Audio Tape, an eight-track format using S-VHS cassettes and named for the company that invented it. ADATs were the first practical, low-cost digital multitracks and became a favorite of scoring composers.
