Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of augmented reality technology as it currently exists and as it is likely to manifest in the future. It begins by defining the terminology that will be used throughout the book, but that may be foreign to most readers. Chief among these is the phrase “augmented reality” itself, along with several related terms used to describe AR experiences. The chapter then discusses examples of how AR is being, and will be used to enhance each of the five senses humans use to experience the physical world, as well as interesting research into extra-sensory augmentation.
