Chapter 11

Politics and Civil Society

Abstract

This chapter discusses the various effects that widespread use of augmented reality media could have on the fabric of society, both positive and negative. On one hand, AR will allow for interesting new models of social mobilization and community in which digital data plays a fundamental role. It also promises an unprecedented mechanism for education and conveying information. As with today’s digital media, however, AR may also contribute to the reduction in face-to-face discourse and the quality of non-digital discourse. This could accelerate such deleterious trends as groupthink on political and social issues and the erosion of compromise and mutual understanding.
