Murphy's law says that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. In live event production, that applies doubly. In the design of electric power distribution and automated lighting systems, it's imperative to build in protection for personnel and equipment in the event of a fault (short circuit) or malfunction. One of the most important means of providing such protection is with the proper use of overcurrent and overvoltage protection.
