Understand Alternate Access Mapping

Alternate Access Mapping (AAM) is a feature in SharePoint that allows for the use of alternate URLs. One of the many steps in bringing your enterprise solution to light is defining URLs for your environment. Your company name often suffices for this requirement, and it is registered with a domain name service. The selected service then maps your URL to an IP address of a particular server of your choosing. Depending on your requirements, the server on the other side of the URL can be a load balancer, proxy server, gateway, and so on, and it needs to handle the incoming requests appropriately.
