How to do it...

We can create a CloudWatch alarm using existing metrics as follows:

1. Go to the CloudWatch service in the console.
2. Click on Alarms from the left sidebar.
3. Click on Create alarm.
4. Click on Select metric. This should show us all the metrics that are available to us based on the services we use:

5. Click on Billing.
6. Click on By Service.
7. Click on Amazon EC2.
8. Click on Select metric. This will take us to the Specify metric and conditions screen.

9. In the Metric section of the Specify metric and conditions screen, use the defaults shown in the following screenshot:
