White balance
Because the colour temperature of different light sources and mixtures of light sources varies, it is essential to select the correct filter and white balance the camera whenever you suspect a change has occurred.
Daylight to tungsten
A common example of changing colour temperature occurs during an evening football match. The game may begin in evening sunshine. The camera will be balanced to a white which, lit by an evening sun, will have a lower colour temperature than at midday. As the football match progresses, the sun goes down and the floodlights come on. If the camera is not white balanced to cover this colour temperature transition, edited highlights of the match will have a different colour cast when cut together.
