Personal communications

Cellular telephones have brought about a revolution in personal telecommunications over the past few years. Their introduction has enabled people to be contacted almost anywhere. Previously it was necessary to be within reach of a fixed telephone wired into the telephone network. A few mobile phones did exist, but they had limited range and were only available in a few cities. To be able to achieve the flexibility and coverage expected today a totally new system was needed.
