To record natural sound, the first step in the system is the microphone. The microphone is a transducer that changes sound energy into electrical energy. All microphones will have a highly flexible diaphragm that will vibrate in sympathy with sound movements of the air. The vibrating diaphragm will create a very small electrical voltage. That small (mic-level) voltage will be passed on to the next piece of equipment in the system. So-called digital microphones will have an A to D converter attached to the diaphragm circuitry to create the digital signal.
