‘Tapeless’ recording of sound and picture, using computers is possible, but still largely too expensive for the smaller users that this book is designed for. The advances with experimental disc based camcorders, combined with non-linear editing, might make for really fast news gathering but it is a long way from the semi-professional market. The fast developing DVD (digital versatile disc) is already available as a playback system, which must mean that a manufacturer will soon look at the possibility of that becoming a new format video recording system.
