Glossary

 

 

ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT – The ratio of how much sound is absorbed by a material against how much is reflected, e.g. AC of 0.3 = 30% absorbed and 70% reflected back into the room.

ACOUSTIC FEEDBACK – The horrible high-pitched whistle caused by the microphone being too close to the loudspeaker (or a pair of headphones) allowing it to ‘hear’ itself.

A/D CONVERTER – (analogue to digital converter). The box that converts normal analogue sounds into digital sounds.

AGC – (automatic gain control). A circuit that automatically adjusts the recording level of video or audio signals.

AMBIENT SOUND – The background sounds within a scene (also ‘atmos’ or ‘buzz’).
