5 Schemes of Battery Testing
The battery characteristic tests are an important part of the battery management system development, and have often been neglected in the past. However, the battery characteristic tests are extensive. Several representative test items are selected and described in this chapter. It is noted that the power battery characteristic tests are not completely equivalent to the product tests specified in current automotive industry standards or by ISO. The test items specified in industry standards are designed to verify whether the battery product is qualified and can be sold on the market, while the battery characteristic tests discussed in this chapter are designed to understand the characteristics of the “managed” battery in order to design a practical battery management system.
5.1 Battery Tests for BMS Development
5.1.1 Test Items and Purpose
The power battery characteristic tests discussed in this chapter are related but yet different from the general performance tests. On the one hand, many characteristic test items are the same as the performance test items. On the other hand, there is a difference in the purpose and significance between the characteristic test and the performance test. The performance tests are designed to evaluate the battery performance, while the characteristic tests are designed to test the battery management object after selecting the battery type and model, so as to understand the battery characteristics for the purpose ...
