A MAN WITH MANY NAMES
Hokusai was born in the Katsushika district of Edo, which is now modern-day Tokyo. At the time, Edo was the biggest city in the world with a population of around one million people. Hokusai’s childhood name was Tokitarō. Throughout his lifetime, he was known by at least thirty names. It was common for artists to use multiple names, and each of Hokusai’s names was related to his changing artistic styles.
