IRANIAN ANCESTRY

Monir was born in a city called Qazvin in Iran. Her family had a long history of important people like religious leaders, traders, and Ottoman aristocracy. Her childhood home was filled with paintings, stained-glass windows, and gardens, which later inspired her art. When she was a child, her father became a member of parliament, and they moved to the capital city of Tehran. There she started taking art lessons and learned to draw by copying pictures on postcards. She wanted to become an artist and went to university for a semester before moving to New York City in 1945.
