YOUNG ACTIVIST
Pacita Abad was born in Basco, Batanes. This tiny island in the Philippines is fewer than 20 square miles (5 sq. m), and there wasn’t a lot of art when Pacita was a child. When her father became a congressman, the family moved to the capital city of Manila. He later received a presidential appointment, and her mother became a congresswoman. Pacita wanted to follow in her family’s footsteps and graduated college in 1968 with a degree in political science. However, there was a lot of social unrest at the time. Pacita became endangered after she organized protests, and her family asked her to go to Spain to finish her studies.
