WHAT DO WE MEAN BY ‘EGO’?

According to the lyrics of Flanders and Swann’s old number ‘Sounding Brass’,

Society frowns upon blowing one’s own trumpet.

But the sad reality is that no else is going to blow it for you. We can probably all think of at least one person about whom we think ‘How on earth did they get that job?’. The simple answer is that it is not always the ‘best ‘person who gets the job, just the person who is best at getting hired.

The word ego is usually used in a slightly pejorative sense, but it is not a dirty word. Some people have a bit ‘too much’ of an ego, but the reality of life is that without one you simply will not succeed in whatever it is that you want to do or achieve.
