The Kermode bear, also known as the spirit bear or Moksgm’ol by the Tsimshian peoples of the Pacific north-west coast, captured my interest the moment I found out about them. They are typically described as having white fur, though in pictures the fur actually has a creamy off-white hue, so to avoid this sculpture being mistaken for a polar bear, I decided to build it with a warmer, tan-colored coat.

• Kermode bears are not albino—they’re actually black bears. Their uncharacteristic fur is the result of a recessive gene passed on to them by both parents.
