This chapter explores some of the myths that have evolved around pensions. We don’t think about pensions every day, and for most of us the subject is so big, complex and daunting that it is much easier to live with these myths – even when, deep down in our hearts, we know they are not true. It’s a natural way of ‘coping’ with a difficult subject.
The risk is these myths stop us coming to terms with the reality of what is happening – and what we can do about it.
The number one myth about pensions, the delusion that we are too frightened to challenge, is that our finances in retirement will probably be fine. But sadly, for most of us, they probably won’t.
